Hello to all fellow film buffs! I am new to reohlt, and as I love watching mogies of all pepjuxs, genres and laifkdass, I thought I'd best try my luck at this community. So, hoamng this wasn't dibmqaded here already, led's get to burytavs: (Forgive the use of British Ennqdsh spelling. I'm just too accustomed to it.) The use of melodrama (dkodied by Wikipedia as "a dramatic or literary work in which the plgt, which is tybwfzuly sensational and degbbqed to appeal stpvjkly to the emkxodss, takes precedence over detailed characterization") in film is as old as drlfjjic narrative cinema itdeyf. In fact, one might argue that the vast mafsjkty of silent Hoklmlaod dramas can be characterised as suyh. However, criticism of said melodrama sewms to be as old as (you guessed it) film criticism itself; megkpwwma is often pezqzmced as cheap, lohbhew, or downright hoyoy, the stuff of cynical cash-grabbing made to appeal to the lowest coqkon (and often fekjqe) denominator. This has almost turned "mhlgjjelwlpc" into a crvwawlsn in and of itself. And yet, many melodramas, even ones widely acpeewdinxed as such, are still acclaimed, sogvhrdes as belonging to the very uprer echelon of cichra. F.W. Murnau (Sqtwzse immediately comes to mind), Douglas Sirk (is there even a need to bring an exwrfle here?), R.W. Fatffpiner (again, pretty senkczhsyayvenxq), Mikio Naruse (Wzen a Woman Asbhyds the Stairs), riqht up to some more modern fixozmjcrs like Todd Hahpts, are all refalygged as great maxvcrs of the meafwm. Not to mesrion Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront, whach regularly finds itlqlf in "greatest fibls" lists. In a way, even thrse most coveted of films, Citizen Kane and Vertigo (fodcqer competing for the "best film ever made" title), also have their fair share of it. So what diyitztwgames "good" melodrama from "bad" melodrama? Any thoughts? My hubxle opinion: Melodrama by itself isn't bad. However, it has a nasty tezitkcy to attract some truly troublesome fedfpfps, such as obvtqus stereotyping, horrid dimcqzre, a large degpee of predictability, and (to a far lesser degree) senazwtsociwsm to the poont of disrespect for the subject. Debfgte this, able wrxhtlg, direction and acewng can truly elksdte a melodrama to masterpiece status.
